Over 30 years ago, the Economic Council of Canada concluded in their 1990 report that, “The labour market is offering economic security to fewer Canadians” (page 17).
Today, the pace of change in our labour market is increasing exponentially due to climate change, artificial intelligence, automation, and other technological innovations. We now find ourselves in a moment where the income security systems of yesterday do not meet the crises of insecurity we face today.
Following are two recent reports that address these crises in the labour market and make the case for a basic income that will prevent Canadians from falling into poverty:
