Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) Updates its Analysis of a National Guaranteed Basic Income
February 19, 2025: The PBO just published an update to their 2021 report on A Distributional Analysis of a National Guaranteed Basic Income. Following PEI’s GBI Report, they did a cost comparison for a GBI using two different definitions of a family unit – the traditional nuclear family and the economic family, which is a broader definition. Like the PEI report, their update found that the cost of a GBI could be cut by roughly half using the broader definition, and the poverty rate cut by 40% in 2025 dollars. Media Conference in PEI
February 20, 2025: A media conference was held in PEI: MP Sean Casey, The Hon. Wayne Easter, Trish Altass (PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women) and Jillian Kilfoil (Women’s Network PEI) attended to present an open letter to the Liberal Leadership candidates explaining the importance of a basic income and the PEI Demonstration Project.
Letter to the Liberal Leadership candidates
February 12, 2025: Coalition Canada and the PEI Working Group for a Livable Income sent a letter to all the Liberal leadership candidates asking them to commit to securing the resources needed to establish a guaranteed basic income (GBI) demonstration project in PEI and to put GBI on the Liberal Party platform. Liberal Leadership Candidate Karina Gould responded by including a basic income guarantee as part of her platform and her commitment to modernize Canada’s social safety net.
